5/7/11 Florida Keys Tarpon and Permit

Capt. Richard Stanczyk
May 8, 2011
Islamorada - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sorry for the lack of updates friends but fishing has gotten EXTREMELY busy the last month! I've been fishing every day and majority of nights - mostly tarpon as that is the thing to do now! We've been catching a lot of them, from 30 lbs to almost 200 lbs! Lots of fish in the nearby channels and bridges of Islamorada Florida Keys. The fish in the everglades just moved back in real thick - they had moved out to spawn I beleive because for a week and a 1/2 or so there wasn't many around back there. I fished a half day yesterday morning and went to bend the rod with trout, ladyfish, snappers, etc... which was pretty good. We stopped at one of my favorite tarpon spots to just try and catch a shark for our last 45 minutes of the day. We hooked 2 big tarpon and landed one, and also caught a hammerhead shark and a black tip. The boat next to us boated a double header tarpon! That night I also fished and we jumped two tarpon nearby channel 2 bridge in Islamorada. But sometimes missing a fish is a good thing - we hooked this 25+ lb permit afterwards on medium spin gear and landed him! We also had another permit bite that just crushed our crab and missed the hook. The permit are swarming on the wrecks off Islamorada, and we caught some in the gulf off some wrecks back there the other day but the bull sharks were horrendous! Also some cobia and big goliaths out there too, plus tarpon on the flat calm days!!! As far as the rest of the fishing goes, plenty of snappers in the bay right now, and some nice muds with trout, ladyfish, and even occasionally pompano still! Some reds in the back too, have not fished for them much though, and reports of a handful of snook which is a good sign hopefully they are on the rebound!

Islamorada Fishing Forecast:

GREAT, remember these florida keys tarpon are here all the way through September often, so just because I am not available now doesn't mean you can't come down and catch one - June and July is great fishing too I have some of my best days then as their is much less pressure on the fish!
