Sometimes anglers spend allot of time moving from spot to spot looking for fish and catching very little. Down here in Islamorada Florida it is easy to get caught up in this type of fishing style. With so much to choose from many anglers check out as many areas as possible only to find their fish box half empty at the end of the day. There are times when moving around will produce however; many areas continue to accumulate fish throughout the day. Working areas slowly and capitalizing on fishing opportunities can be very productive most of the time. Observing the charter boats in the Islamorada area it is easy to see that the pros work methodically. Patience is truly a virtue and often rewarded by consistent fishing action.
A wise angler once said, "If you think you are fishing slow, slow down some more". When fishing the uneven bottom areas off Islamorada it is so important to move slowly through these areas and pay close attention to Frigate birds, flying fish in flight, floating debris, and fish busting the surface. It is difficult to observe all these indicators if you are moving real fast.
We often move through these high wave areas over and over again and constantly catch Tuna, Mahi, Wahoo, and billfish. Most of the time we fish these areas using a combination of lures and rigged baits. Providing fish a choice of bait sizes to choose from is very important when looking for different species of fish that move through the Islamorada area. It is not uncommon for the biggest fish of the day to eat the smallest bait. So be prepared with your best tackle, new line, sharp hooks and good leaders.
April has been fantastic for off-shore and reef fishing. We are looking forward to May. May is often regarded as the best month of the year for variety. It seems all fish species that swim in Florida waters are abundant during the month of May. There will be lots of Mahi, Tuna, Wahoo, Amberjacks, Yellow Tail, and bill fish moving through the Islamorada area. Come down and catch some of these great fish!
