Upper Florida Keys & Islamorada

Capt. Izzy Donatiello
February 27, 2001
Islamorada - Saltwater Fishing Report

The wind has been a problem over the last week. However, the fishing has been good. On the offshore grounds. The sails have turned off in Islamorada, however, they continue to bite off key largo. The kings are being caught on a regular basis with more 20 pounders showing. Small tuna are on the "HUMP." Feathers and rubber eels fished far behind the boat is the ticket. Last week, we caught a dozen dolphin to 10 pounds and two wahoo off a mourning buoy 4 miles to the south of the hump in 800 feet of water. The shallow patches are loaded with gags and red groupers; live pinfish will result in a grouper dinner.

The water in the backcountry is warming up; on the calm days tarpon are being caught at the bridges and snook are again eating. The spanish mackerel are still at Springer bank with small kings and trout mixed in. Nine mile bank is holding trout and big sharks.

All and all fishing has been good; if the wind cooperates.

Book a trip with a full time pro.

Izzy
