Busy Week in Jacksonville!

Capt. James Howard
July 20, 2009
Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report

There will not be any pressure inshore in Jacksonville this week but all the boat ramps will be packed due to the Jacksonville King Fish tournament. With close to a thousand boats headed to the ocean you better camp out over night to get a trailer spot!

The Trout are in full gear in the river with a lot of the fish full of roe. If you're not keeping any you should handle them with care and get them back in the water. These fish have thousands of eggs in them which ensure crops of Trout for years to come.

There has also been all the 8 inch Red fish you can catch and that is a good sign for that crop also. The Red fish grow very quick the first few years of there life. If you catch small ones and the hook is deep in there throat just cut it off and they will survive trying to dig it out will only kill them so don't be cheap and give up that 25 cent hook. When you're on a school of small Reds be aware to set the hook when you first feel the hit to keep from gut hooking them.

It makes for a great charter for young kids because they will be able to catch plenty of fish on there on…

The larger Reds are also chewing in the creeks. Some days they will feed like crazy and the next they will make you work for the bite. The key is not getting to close to them in the shallow water.

There has been some nice 3 to 5 pound Jacks under the birds in the river at the flood tide. I never pass by the birds with out throwing some plastics. There is not a better fight than a nice Jack on light tackle!!!
