Cleaner Water!

Capt. James Howard
July 13, 2009
Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report

Because of the dirty water the past month the Flounder gigging trips have not been very productive. You just can't gig Flounder if it is hard to see. Even though you will usually get a fish or two it's hardly worth the work…

With a little change in the water clarity last week I was able to slip out and give it a try. The water was much better than it had been but there were not very many Flounder in the area we had decided to gig.

A lot of times you will run across a Sheepshead or two when you're gigging but they are hard to stick most of the time. When you do stick one of any size you better hold on because they are going to swim hard.

Out of all the Flounder gigging trips I have done over the years I can't remember seeing as many Sheepshead as we did the other night. It was like the Flounder left and the Sheepshead took over. I bet we saw at least 20 Sheepshead in this one area. Of course we only got 6 but that's not bad when you gig as many Sheepshead as you do Flounder.

As far as the fishing goes the Trout are thick in the river with a lot of them in the 3 to 4lb range. The Red fish are feeding strong in the creeks also. I'll have a report on that and some great pictures next week…

Jacksonville Fishing Forecast:

As far as the Trout go it is all you want. The Reds are also feeding good in the creeks with a lot of the fish in the 4 to 8lb range. Now's a good time to book a trip.
