Families love the "Sharkin" trips"

Capt. Dave Sipler

Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report

What is sometimes the best thing to do with 4 passengers, and two were kids under 10. When the inshore fishing is fickle in the summer heat?

Well, "run & gun" fishing behind the shrimp boats comes to MY mind. And to Jacksonville Florida's Steve W. who now lives in Dallas, Texas thought the same thing.

"My kids will LOVE IT!"

I don't know who actually had more of a blast, his two young boys or Steve himself??

The Sharkin' has been up and down, so I was a bit sceptical. The day before I headed north with three guys for TARPON and sharks, and the Poons never showed, and the sharks certainly were not thick, as I ran 30 pounds of chum, thru my chum chopper.

see it in action here, right after installation:

So, instead of running north again with Steve and family, I headed south out the St. Johns River inlet. Spying a few big shrimp boats in the S.E. Hole area.

It was "game-on" immediately. And we had a double header of Sharp-noses on for the kids.

It continued that way, and they battled 10 sharks of various sizes till the sun got really hot, and then the bite shut down. So we finished up inside the inlet letting the kids catch some Whiting and Yellowmouth Trout on shrimp.

Then, they got to see the largest ship, they'll ever see. The Eisenhower AirCraft Carrier pulling into Mayport. Driving right past us.

The day was complete, satisfying and the whole family was wore out. Time to hit the pool back at the resort.

More Fishing Reports:

Inshore fishing the St. Johns River, and estuaries around Jacksonville, Florida provides year round opportunities for Redfish, Speckled Trout, Flounder, Black Drum, and Sheepshead to name just a few. Plus, seasonal favorites such as Shark, Tripletail and Pompano. The legendary Mayport Jetties are mile long piles of huge granite boulders that protect the inlet to the St. Johns River from the Atlantic Ocean. Around these jetties is some of the best and most consistent fishing.
