Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fishing has picked up considerably since my last report. Just about all of our migratory fish have made an appearance. The water temperature is now close to 80 degrees. Jacks, ladyfish, and bluefish are likely to smash your lures or bait at any time. Spanish mackerel, and cobia are sporadically moving along the coast.We had a red hot week of cobia fishing about three weeks ago.
I've seen the first tarpon , spinner sharks, and kingfish at the jetty tips. Schools of pogies can be found most days, and are great baits for redfish along the jetties and any other gamefish in the area. You might see large barracuda and jack crevalle, as well as cobia near these pogie pods.
Some nice trout are available to lure anglers willing to be on the water very early. Top water and lipped diving plugs work well,as do live shrimp on float rigs. A few flounder are around, but not in any great numbers. The black drum are still biting at the jetty tips. The most consistent action for me have been the redfish along the big jetties at the entrance to the St Johns River.
The sheepshead have slowed down, as they always do in the warmer months, but some are still here. Some whiting and pompano are being caught in the surf and from the piers. The weather has been beautiful lately, and the beaches are clean and inviting, so plan a fishing trip!
