Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report
The last few days have actually felt like fall. The water temperature is still in the high 70's, and the mullet are making their annual run to the sea and points further south. Tarpon, sharks, jacks, blues, flounder, etc., are escorting them along, gorging on the way.
Bull redfish are in the river for their annual spawn. Crab, cut bait, live croakers, mullet, or pogies fished along the channel edges are the best baits. Bull sharks follow them into the river, and will ocassionally eat a hooked fish.
Reds are available along the jetties too, and are suckers for a mullet or pogie pinned to a jighead and bounced along the rocks. Oh, did I mention they are along the ICW and in the creeks also? Sheepshead are starting to show at the jetties. Jacks, ladyfish, and bluefish can appear anytime, anywhere in the river harassing schools of baitfish. Look for feeding birds.
Speckled trout seem to have taken a hit from the cold winter we had this year. They are still here, just more difficult to catch. Surface or diving plugs will catch the larger ones. Shrimp under corks or fished on a jig will also work.
Surf and pier fishing should be good for whiting, blues, drum, redfish, and flounder. A fresh dead shrimp or live finger mullet is an effective bait. All in all, it's a good time to go fishing!
