Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report
Inshore fishing has continued to remain consistent the last 2 weeks. The water temperature has continued to drop, which will trigger some great action for the next couple of months. November and December are my favorite months for catching schooling redfish.
The last few weeks have seen breezy conditions with higher than normal tides. The lower tides are still a foot or so above average, causing the redfish spread out within a creek system or up on a flat. I've been having great results fishing a Cajun thunder float with a ¼ oz jig. I tie a 2 foot leader from the float to the jig head placing a gulp shrimp or mud minnow on the jig. The trick is to cast to spots along the shoreline that have grass islands, pockets, oysters or creek mouths. Pop the float every 5 to 10 seconds allowing float to move with the tide. The brass beads add a "clacking" sound, drawing in redfish and trout. This is a perfect setup this time of year due to several reasons: Water temps are cool but not too cold for the fish to be aggressive. It's almost like a topwater lure with the added benefit of a grub on the bottom. It's also a good choice when the conditions are windy.
I have been fishing mostly from Palm Valley south to St Augustine the last week. There have been great numbers of speckled trout along the Intracoastal Waterway and redfish back in the creek systems. Large schools of fun catching bluefish have shown up, which can make some fast and furious action on topwater plugs and grubs. Look for seagulls diving on schools of small ribbonfish, the blues and trout will be there.
Redfish will school up as the water temps drops and can be found further in the back of tidal creek systems.
