Jacksonville high topwater fishing is great, Low tide-better

Capt. Ron Schurr
March 29, 2008
Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report

Inshore fishing in Northeast Florida has kicked into high gear. Last week we were blessed with low winds and mid day high tides. I focused most of my trips just south of Jacksonville, From Palm Valley to St Augustine. The top water bite was outstanding on the higher incoming tide phase. I concentrated mainly on wide bays and mudflats along the Intracoastal Waterway, where the rising water pushed in schools of mullet up on the flat. Most of our topwater action came from spots that had sections broken Spartina grass and island points and cuts. Skitterwalks and Zara Spooks fished real slow produced the most strikes.

Low tide has been the best tide, especially this past week. Redfish are really hungry and aggressive. Jigs tipped with shrimp or scented soft plastics fished slowly along drop-offs and shell bars accounted for most catches.
