Mid Summer, big fish action.

Capt. Dave Sipler

Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report

Although the ocean temp was 76 degrees versus the 81 to 83 degrees that would be considered normal.

The Sharkin' is pretty good.

I had a request this week for a Sharkin' trip. And while I was at the dock waiting for my charter customers to arrive. I noticed a big "knot" of Mullet jumping right off the end of the dock.

I quickly grabbed my cast net and made a pitch in their direction.

B-A-M.......I caught no less than 30 prime shark baits in the 10-12" catagory.

Live bait, is always better than dead bait. Especially, when it "could" be hard to get the bite going.

Ran to the S.E. Hole in about 55 feet of water, and as 2 large shrimp boats made some passes I dropped two mullet on floats out behind the boat.

Before noon we landed 6 jumping and explosively striking Blacktip sharks.

The largest was maybe 70 pounds, which came after a bit of chumming. I utilized the "freezer clean-out" method. Dropping pounds of old frozen bait into my "chum chopper" that I have built into the stern of my custom 26' Plate Alloy welded boat.

We did see Tarpon rolling, had a giant Manta Ray comeinto the chum slick and give us a few "fly by's" which was too cool. Saw nerf football sized Lil' Tunny jumping around after clouds of glass minnows.

And the live big Mullet were the ticket. The strikes we got were nothing short of EXPLOSIVE!

The next day was a fun day for 3 kids and dad while on vacation.

We started the first hour off with an 11 year old boy getting his butt handed to him by a 23 pound Redbass!

ALL BEFORE 8am!

Then afterwards I let them do all the fishing, using dead shrimp while the kids ran dad and I ragged, catching Whiting, Croakers, and Yellowmouth Trout and a few Seabass.

The kids 8 to 15 were having a ball, as they learned how to cast, set the hook and feel the bite.

My best advice, is too book as early as you can. So I can plan your day and don't forget the TIDE means everything inshore.

Call to book your day NOW...it's not against the law to get some good tidal days as far in advance as October. When the big Reds really CHEW!

More Fishing Reports:

Inshore fishing the St. Johns River, and estuaries around Jacksonville, Florida provides year round opportunities for Redfish, Speckled Trout, Flounder, Black Drum, and Sheepshead to name just a few. Plus, seasonal favorites such as Shark, Tripletail and Pompano. The legendary Mayport Jetties are mile long piles of huge granite boulders that protect the inlet to the St. Johns River from the Atlantic Ocean. Around these jetties is some of the best and most consistent fishing.
