GET READY...JAX FL REPORT

Capt. Dave Sipler
February 16, 2011
Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report

Get ready folks......

March 1st is right around the corner. Time to start thinking;

SPECKLED TROUT!

FLOAT-RIG FISHING!

LIVE SHRIMPS!

REALLY GOOD EATS!

In preparation for March 1st, when the Specks re-open. Myself and Doc Miller headed out on Feb 15th, to check on the status of the catch rate.

A little closed season R&D.

We've been both doing the ole bottom fishing thang for Black Drum and Sheepshead for what seems to be WAY too long, this winter.

Yes, the Drum bite has been great. But lately has fallen off severely.

So Feb 15th was the first day of some actual PRE-full moon week tide, but without it being too severe as the tides will be starting on the 18th.

(which I'm booked on the 19th, 20th, and 21st...guess people don't know much about the tides.)

So as the wind started to blow up to 20 knots from the east and the falling tide pushed against it. The St. Johns River was just a tad heinous. White caps and folding seas inside the river.

So NO, we didn't head to the inlet at all.

We did frustratingly catch Trout, and a Yellowmouth Trout aka: Weakfish. A few would have been keepers, and a few weren't.

It was so hard to float-rig, cast and even anchor precisely. I was really getting Pee-oo'd.

But heck, we caught them at least.

It felt good to have the float-rigs in hand and doing what I love to do best. Rather than just dropping to the bottom.

LOCAL trout fishing is a "in-pursuit" fishing. The reward is catching some BIG TROUT. and that's all I live for, personally.

So start thinking MARCH, TROUT, and reserve your day in advance. 2 weeks to 30 days.

"IF", you want the best tidal days...yes your day has everything to do with the tides.

Here in J-ville the tides are everything. I'm just the guide, so take my advice or not. It's your charter.....

More Fishing Reports:

Inshore fishing the St. Johns River, and estuaries around Jacksonville, Florida provides year round opportunities for Redfish, Speckled Trout, Flounder, Black Drum, and Sheepshead to name just a few. Plus, seasonal favorites such as Shark, Tripletail and Pompano. The legendary Mayport Jetties are mile long piles of huge granite boulders that protect the inlet to the St. Johns River from the Atlantic Ocean. Around these jetties is some of the best and most consistent fishing.
