Dozens of Dolphin

Capt. Colin Hickey
May 26, 2009
Jupiter - Saltwater Fishing Report

I thought it would be a great idea to take advantage of the great fishing down in the keys over Memorial weekend, but only came home to braggers around here about the fishing over the weekend. The keys only produced a plethora of small (throwback) dolphin and a white marlin which hit every leader I rigged for dolphin and wahoo, except my marlin lure rigged with momois 250lb leader specifically for that one marlin I wouldn't be surprised of raising this time of year in the keys.

Locally, the bite has not let up and with great sea conditions it will be easier to run further in pursuit of large dolphin under pods of sargassum. The winds are to change more out of the west which could disturb the dolphin bite but should not damper it too much, however the great kingfish bite this area produces is showing up in typical numbers for the summer time.

If you are fishing any of the upcoming KDW's, I would recommend high-speed trolling on the way out and then give it another hour or so, because any wahoo you may get even a weehoo is capable of bringing in money in these KDW's. A kingfish will most likely win big fish but definitely have a good plan to target dolphin too. The best of the kingfish seems to be off the breakers, lost tree and the Loran; I'm sure in between will still produce just not in the same numbers. If you come up on a schoolie of dolphin remember to only take what is sufficient for the table and you can always release dolphin just as easy as any fish, I just got to witness someone in the isands bring home 51 dolphin to the marina, made me sick to my stomach. Bring a fly rod with you for a schoolie and catching and releasing won't be so boring.

Will be doing charters out of the Middle Keys for the remainder of May and June, contact if interested.
