Jupiter & Palm Beach Offshore Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Rob Mazzei
May 22, 2001
Jupiter - Saltwater Fishing Report

Dolphin, Wahoo, And Sailfish Off West Palm Beach!

Kingfish, Bonito, Cobia, Snook, and Tarpon are around as well. For the last two weeks inshore and offshore has picked up and slack off, respectively. Snook and Tarpon have started to move along the beaches and around the inlets, some of the local bridges at night. Baitfish can be found in the same areas.

Offshore was red hot for several days but has tapered off a bit the last couple of days. Prior to that Dolphin to 50lbs., Kingfish in the 40lbs. range and Sailfish 40-60lbs. My boat has not been fortune enough to catch a wahoo, but in the Grand Slam Tournament a wahoo 55lbs. was weighed in and won. Several others were caught as well. Believe it not, the winning fish was caught on a dead sardine, drifted in 240ft.

Kingfishing moved south off the Breakers over the last few days. Sails have been mixed in. Bonitos are scattered, but once you find them they are thick. Dolphin have been around, but not in great size or numbers. We did see many 1-2lbs dolphin swimming under a turtle in 50 feet of water, so go figure.

The water temps dropped a little and that may have scattered the fish. Once we get a good push of rich, warm gulfstream water the action will turn on again. There have been some weedlines, but nothing you can count on. One day there we three separate weedlines, out to 330 feet. Yesterday we ran out to 800 feet and found none. We came back in and worked 100-180 and caught some small dolphin, big bonito and had a 8 foot Hammerhead shark chased a bonito around the boat, before a porpoise beat the shark to the fish. A second bonitos was pitched out but the shark must have gotten discouraged and never came back up. We did catch two lemon sharks in 100 feet this past week.

I’ll be out of town for two weeks or so. Two weddings in Long Island. The rest will be Striper fishing.

Good luck fishing and have fun! Sea conditions have been perfect.

Capt Rob

P.S. Sail King’s new motto is " if doesn’t have fins, props or hooters…count me out!!!"
