Jupiter & Palm Beach Offshore Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Rob Mazzei
April 17, 2002
Jupiter - Saltwater Fishing Report

King Mackerel and Bonito arrive, Dolphin still scarce.

Kingfish have arrived in good numbers and are eager to bite. 90 feet from Juno to Jupiter has been the most productive for us. Most fish are 10-20 lbs. but we got a "smoker" in the high 30 lbs. range and some fish close to 50 lbs. have been caught by other boats.

Large bonito have also shown up providing steady action for those who just want to bend a rod, or use for bait. Most bonito have been caught trolling artificials around the schools of flying fish.

Severel wahoo have been caught in the 100-250 foot range high-speed troll or bridle up a bullet bonito will increase the odds at seeing a wahoo (or marlin).

Dolphin haven't really made a good showing yet, some boats will get several fish while most other don't get any. Any day that could all change, once the sargasso weed starts to show up thicker.

Sailfish are still around, most fish are caught within the 70-90 foot range around the kingfish school. They will surprise you and are fun after catching kings and bonito for a while and then to have a sailfish explode on the surface and do his thing.

Live sardines and cigar minnows have been fairly easy to catch in 20-40 feet. Greenies and pilchards are up close to the south jetty at Jupiter inlet.

Watch for fishing to improve once the weather warms and becomes more stable. The weekend's weather is predicated to be nice, with light winds so now the time to prepare. Catch'um up!
