Jupiter & Palm Beach Offshore Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Rob Mazzei
December 18, 2002
Jupiter - Saltwater Fishing Report

Mugged by Mahi!

Incredible dolphin(a.k.a. mahi mahi) fishing has been the highlight of Palm Beach's offshore fishing over the last few weeks.

Decent weedlines, well defined rips and current edges have been very common in and around 150-300 feet. Several days in a row we've found these conditions along with 50 or more birds working the surface hard. We shut down chummed with cut bait and soon had a school of 6-8lbs. fish under the boat, we caught many, many dolphin but Capt. Frank on the "High Fequency" caught a 50.5lbs bull dolphin and many 30+lbs. fish have been caught this past week or two.

The best fishing days seem to 2-3 days after each cold front, once the wind turns northwest to north. Good water condition are most important and those conditions seem to be coming after each front that passes. The mahi seem to like.

Sailfish? Since I bought a new sailfish release flag 4 days ago we haven't caught a sailfish. Is it a "bad mojo"?, probably not, reports have it fishing for sails has slowed. We've flown the kite with live goggles eyes since Sunday and haven't had a bite. Other boats have scored with several fish so we'll keep at it in between dolphin blitzes. Word is their are large scools of sailfish off Fort Pierce chasing bait in shallow. Cooler temps will encourage them to move south, hopefully just in time for Christmas.

No wahoo for us this week, but they're around. It's been a little too rough to high-speed troll for them. A kite bait will account for them as well but covering ground(water) trolling is by far the best way for wahoo.

Kingfishing hasn't been all that great either, the drift boat have caught some. Most are around 10lbs.

Spanish Mackerel fishing has been red hot north of Hobe Sound. At times we've caught fish on every cast. Capt. Dino Torrino of Fin Chaser Fly Fish Charters in Staten Island, NY murdered them on "epoxy flies" in white and yellow patterns.
