Jupiter & Palm Beach Offshore Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Rob Mazzei
August 20, 2005
Jupiter - Saltwater Fishing Report

Summer Sails!

Is it January or August? Are the sailfish confused or are they just visiting, enjoying the calm seas and warm weather. I'm not sure. For what ever reason they're here and they're eager to please.

Typically, winter time is sailfish season here in The Palm Beaches, at such time multi-fish days are a common occurrance. Although summer season we do see a decent number of sailfish, nothing compares to the bite as of late. We've caught sailfish almost every trip out. Our best day yet has been 3 for 5 sailfish in 4 hours. Each day sailfish can be seen free jumping anywhere from 90 to 300 ft. from Juno Beach to the Hobe Sound loran tower.

The real excitement is the fact that we don't have the winter time sea conditions where 3 to 5ft seas are the norm. The ocean has been dead flat in the mornings making bait easy to find and enabling us to scoot around and cover some water to locate the best conditions. Also what is special is in between bonita bites when the surface erupts with the 6ft sailfish tail walking across the surface providing excitement second to none.

As predicted the influx of spanish sardines and threadfin herring has encouraged sailfish to remain close by.

The live bait finally showed up 6 weeks late and now are very abundant from the Jupiter inlet south to the Juno pier. Early morning has been the best time to locate the bait schools along the beach.

Wonderful Wahoo!

If you have never caught a Wahoo before, this is the time to do so. They are here and happy to accomodate those willing to burn $2.75 a gallon of gas to do so. We have caught several live baiting. The most productive way is high speed trolling. Recently we have seen multi fish days. Anywhere from 120 to 300ft. is prime location for these striped speedsters. One negative about the high speed troll is if you don't catch a Wahoo, you still have to pay for the gas you burn up. We have been concentrating on live baiting with the kite and helium balloon set-up. We have had several Wahoo sky rocket on live baits close to 50lbs. Although we use a short trace of #5 wire leader, when the fish skyrockets a bait he sometimes misses and cuts the line above the leader. That's fishing! The excitement provided is worth it.

Kingfish Kingdom!

Kingfishing has been good all summer, but lately the bite has been red hot. We have caught them in 70-100 ft. from the pier to Hobe Sound. Over the last few days, the ledge off Hobe Sound has been the prime location. Just watch out for the angry commercial fishermen.

The snapper bite has been good as well, with muttons to 8lbs. Decent size mangrove snapper and almost as many yellowtails as you desire to catch.

Inlet Snooking

Inlet Snooking has been incredible on the outgoing tide. Doesn't seem to matter what time of the day it is as long the tide is pushing hard. They have been eating any live bait thrown their way. The season will open in approximately 2 weeks. The bite typically will taper off at that time, but when the finger mullet show up you could find yourself in an all out blitz with snook, tarpon, jacks, bluefish and sharks all chasing mullet along the beaches.
