Jupiter & Palm Beach Offshore Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Rob Mazzei
December 17, 2006
Jupiter - Saltwater Fishing Report

Offshore West Palm Beach Fishing Heats Up!

The weather man finally gave us a break in the wind and allowed us to get offshore.

Dolphin have been cooperating along the reef and as far offshore as you care to travel. Trolling, then live baiting will produce larger fish. Sailfish may show at any time, they’ll usually "turn on" at some time during the day. Keeping a bait in the water is the only way to know when. Fighting the bonitos, waiting for the sail bite can be fun, but check your tackle often, you don’t want a dull hook and chafed leader when a sail or dolphin bites.

Most of the action has taken place north of Palm Beach Inlet. Most boats seem to be concentrating in 100-200 feet off the Juno pier.

Bait has been scarce, which is typical around this time of year. You can either buy bait or get up at 3am and try to locate and catch goggle eyes before the sun comes up. Gogs and going for $80 a dozen.

No wahoo for us this week, but they're around. It's been a little too rough to high-speed troll for them. A kite bait will account for them as well but covering ground(water) trolling is by far the best way for wahoo.

Another alternative is to catch blue runners. Troll small bucktail jigs just behind your prop wash in 15-30 feet. Rock piles along the beach will generally produce enough runners to get you into a sail or two.
