SouthEast Winds All Week

Capt. Colin Hickey
June 9, 2008
Jupiter - Saltwater Fishing Report

NOAA forecast shows 5-10 knt winds this week. This should push bait schools in along the shore, making a short run to target kings. The bait has been around finding it is the tough part.

I just got back from the islands, however all the talk has been about this wahoo bite. Some nice fish have been caught and from what I understand the best bet is on a high speed troll. For a high speed troll 12knts is best when trolling natural baits to avoid them being washed out. At higher speeds troll lures such as Black Bart, Wahoo King lures, Wahoo Smackers, and Braid or Yo Zuri lures all work well. Attach your main line to a cable with a trolling/jet weight. Then attach your shock leader, I prefer 300 or 400 lb. mono. A trolling weight with cable is preffered because sometimes the fish will hit that trolling weight. Get out early and pay attention to the moon phases for best results.

Expect Kings in between 40ft - 100 ft with the SE wind. If fishing with live runners dont be surprised release a sail or two, however you may be wasting your google eyes to boneheads. When I was returning from the islands yesterday some talk on the radio was focused on the dolphin bite, some caught off Lost Tree in 600ft.

I usually only target tarpon in the keys, however tarpon have been making a strong appearance in the Lake Worth and St. Lucie Inlets, they have also been seen rolling along the beaches between Jupiter Inlet and Hobe Sound Public Beach and north.
