Miami and Key Biscayne – offshore

Capt. Quinton Dieterle
May 7, 2001
Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report

Choppy Conditions

With winds whipping in excess of 20 knots and seas in the 6 to 7 ft range many anglers took the week off. Though the Cutting Edge was booked and fished each day it was sometimes less than enjoyable. Last week the fishing was better, but you had to dodge the thunderstorms all day, this weekend the storms moved offshore and the fishing slowed down. If you put in the time though, you could make a decent day off fishing out of the adverse conditions. Last week we caught a total of 12 sailfish and saw countless others that were either unwilling to eat or that we pulled hooks on. The sailfish have been on the edge in the area of 60 to 100 ft., a bit shallow for normal Sailfishing standards. The sailfish over the weekend were seen to the north off the Sea buoy and were also in the area of 60 to 100 ft. Small Dolphin have also been a target species, they have been offshore a bit more in the 350 to 450-ft. range. They have been chasing flying fish and are in the 2 to 3 pound range. They would bite a small feather or live bait if you could get it in front of them. I did hear of a few bigger fish seen under hawks. Kingfish are still biting to the North off Miami Beach and have been shallow. Pilchards have been the desired bait. The wrecks are producing good action on Amber jacks and some Cobia. There have also been some tailing Cobia in the 100 ft. depth range and shallower. I have seen some tarpon rolling on the inside of Key Biscayne lighthouse in the mornings; they will bite live shrimp and crabs. Bait has been tough with the milky water conditions, we have been catching Goggle eyes and a few Threadfins at bug light and the monument can. This week should bring more Dolphin and Sailfish action. The strong East wind should push the fish close to shore and make for choppy but good fishing.

Tight lines and Good Fishing.
