Cutting Edge

Dolphin Slow Down
While most of the summer has been producing some of the best Dolphin fishing I have seen in a Decade, you figured it had to slow down sooner or later. Well, this week unfortunately was later. Now we did catch Dolphin on each trip I ran on the Cutting Edge, but to find them was extremely tough. The fish that we are catching are small and at times a good distance off shore. On Saturday we looked for almost 8 hours and went over 70 miles hunting and only found fish 3 times, a few times on Floaters and once on birds. The fish on birds have been 1 to 2 pounds and the fish found on floaters have been in the 3 to 5 pound range with a big fish once in a while. Gary Lawson on the Boat Center Contender ran twenty-seven miles out on Sunday and did find a nice weed line, he said it looked awesome but there were no fish on it. He did find a few floaters on the way out and caught thirty fish. A couple of boats reported south off Key Largo that late on Sunday they did find a few fish on a grass line ten miles out, this could be another group of fish moving our way. In closer the action has been better than you would think, with a good afternoon Sailfish bite and some Blackfins still around it is enough to keep things interesting. The Black fins have been south off Triumph Reef and in 130 ft. most of the day, a few have been caught deeper. Fishing in shallow this time of the year is tough with live bait because of all the Hound fish; they pick at your baits all day and make kite fishing quite Frustrating. The wrecks are producing Amberjacks, some muttons and a few kings.
Bait fishing has been getting better with some schools of Pilchards and Threadfins moving though Hawks Channel.
Outlook: With winds picking up this week the South East breeze could push more fish closer to shore and help pack the grass up. A more concentrated area of grass will hold more fish and make them easier to locate.
Tight Lines.
