Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Quinton Dieterle
Tight Lines
Offshore action remains Good
The weather pattern has given us some of the best opportunities to fish in years. Calm seas and good action must be the reason for all the excitement. On any given day you can count numerous boats running wild across the ocean in search of the prized Dolphin, and in most situations they are coming home with lots to talk about. This week the fish have been plentiful and the size has slowly been increasing. This weekend we could have had our limit by 9 in the morning, but with hopes of catching larger fish we would jump from school to school. We found out by day’s end that most of the fish were in the 3 to 5 pound range. We did catch two nice fish that topped the scale at 17 pounds. You can find the fish anywhere from 3 to 20 miles out and as you work south the fish are in closer. We were fishing off Ocean Reef this past weekend and found fish in 400 to 600 ft., off Miami the fish were in 1400 ft. Most of the school fish are biting chunks of Bally hoo or small live pilchards. If you find the Bonito birds you will find the Dolphin.
On the Edge Marty Locke on the Boat Center Contender is finding some nice Black Grouper and Mutton Snapper. He caught several fish in the 20-pound class fishing the rocky bottom south of Pacific Light. Off Miami Capt. Eric Stuart caught a 35-pound Black Grouper on a kingfish rig. He was fishing in 125 ft. of water and using live pilchards for bait. He runs the Charter Boat Carrie Ann.
Other action on the Edge is Bonito, and a Few Sailfish. The warm water is making it tough to get bites fishing the surface on the edge.
Bait fishing has been tough, the clear water and warm water work against you this time of the year. If you need live bait, which we have been doing with out, you might look north off Government Cut. Look for the birds flying high above the schools of Pilchards.
Good Luck and Tight Lines.
