Miami and Key Biscayne – offshore

Capt. Quinton Dieterle
July 8, 2001
Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report

GREEN OCEAN

If you have been fishing much in the past few months you would have to agree the fishing has been fantastic. The action offshore has been about the best I have seen since the days I ran around in a 13 ft. boat as a kid, and that was a while ago. The fish are nice size and have been easy to catch. This is the first year I can remember catching fish each day and on dead bait. The last ten years or so the fish have been finicky and hard to bite, this year they are eating just about anything that hits the water. I have been asked why lately by our clients and I have to say maybe the limits and regulations are making a difference. Today for instance we caught our limit by eleven in the morning, years ago we would have just kept on catching. Ten years ago we might have caught 200 on a day like today and most days this summer have been the same. Years ago most captains fought the new laws today most are happy with the results. It makes my job a lot more enjoyable knowing the fish are going to be out there somewhere. Most charter boats used to call the summer the slow months, now there as busy as winter. Once the locals know the fish are here there ready to go search for them.

Today the fish were in 1100 ft. and found mostly around birds and floaters. The fish were moving quickly to the south and would eat chunks of cigar minnow or ballyhoo. The larger fish were in packs of 10 to 15 fish and the smaller 3 pounders were in big bunches, sometimes as many as 100 fish. There were only 2 large fish seen today and those were only twenty pounders. The edge is producing some bottom action and lots of bonito. I have not tried it myself in a couple of weeks but have been listening to the party boats and it sounds slow.

This time of the year is when the Thunder storms start moving through in the afternoons and you should if possible stay clear. Some days we have had winds up to 50 knots blow through. The lightening will also keep you on your toes. I recommend going the opposite direction if you can. If you do get stuck, stay low to avoid the lighting strikes.

Good Luck and tight Lines.

LETS GO FISHING!!!!!!!!!!!
