Miami and Key Biscayne – offshore

Capt. Quinton Dieterle
July 15, 2001
Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report

Slight Slow Down

WEST WINDS CALM ACTION

A strong west wind late Friday and Saturday along with the light but steady west wind all week is what it took to slow down the best Dolphin Season I can remember in a long time. Finally the action slowed, but not because the fish have all been caught, they are most likely all on the Bimini side of the stream. Each day last week it seemed like the fish were moving farther and farther offshore. Several days last week the fish were actually moving in an easterly direction, coasting down sea. Another group of fish will most likely take the place of the fish that moved out of the area, but it might take a few days or a change of wind direction back to the Southeast. The conditions change offshore each day so I never count out a day because the day before was slow. The fish were nice size most of last week, the average size in the 4 to 5 pound range. The Dolphin were in grass patches and under birds and eating good, with the favorite bait being small live blue runners. Some larger fish have been caught under floaters and under Frigate birds. On the edge the action has been slow, some kings and a few small mutton snapper is all I have heard of. Three new wrecks were sunk last week, the depths were approximately 140 ft. off the Hotels on Key Biscayne, and the GPS numbers will be given out soon.

Bait fishing has remained slow the with hot water and clear conditions making it tough. Some medium size pilchards have been caught along the Beach, north of the Cut.
