Miami and Key Biscayne – offshore

Capt. Quinton Dieterle
July 23, 2001
Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report

Weather not as Bad as the Weatherman said

The weekend was quit nice compared to what the weatherman said it was going to be. The seas were calm on Saturday and the rain stayed away most of the day, Sunday the winds came up but out of the Southwest, which made the edge easy to fish.

Getting booked with an unusual amount of half day trips this week it actually worked out nice. The mornings were nice and the afternoons got the rain. Fishing on the Edge for the first time in a while I found it to be active. We started of on Friday morning dropping on the Wrecks south of Fowey Light and caught some big Barracuda and a few small Amberjacks. The jacks are small but fun to fight and release. We also caught a few big Dolphin that found us, some bonito that always tug hard and missed a Sailfish. It was steady action and the customers had a great time. Saturday and Sunday we decided to fish the edge, the decreasing amount of Dolphin in the Area were to far out to reach on a half day, which really makes the decision to fish the edge easy. But, the action was again steady and the customers were happy. Sunday the edge was the best with a nice king, loads of Bonito, a few BIG Barracuda and a big Black Fin Tuna in the Box. We also missed a big Sailfish. Marty Locke on the Boat Center Contender which is now Chartering full time, had a banner day on the edge Sunday catching a bunch of Bonito's and 6 Black Fin Tuna. That's the best report on Tuna's I have heard of all year. If I'm booked and you would like to fish with him his new number is 305-788-5991. It seems for some reason the strong South West winds simply turn the tuna's on. Capt. Pete on the Wild Life also had a great day on the Edge Sunday, catching at least one Black Fin and Two Sailfish. He was fishing south of Fowey and in 130 ft. of water, he was using Threadfins and pilchards for bait. Most of the kingfish and other action was limited to the area north and south of Fowey light, I heard of boats fishing north and getting no action.

Dolphin fishing has been OK on days I fish full day trips. The fish are at least 10 off and could be as far as 25. They are on birds and patches if you can find any. The fish are nice size and are in packs of 10 to 20 fish. They are biting live and dead bait. Some bigger fish are being caught on Floaters.

Good Luck this Week and watch for the Storms and stay clear.
