Miami and Key Biscayne – offshore

Capt. Quinton Dieterle

Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report

Offshore Fishing Still Productive

At the tackle shop the other day a couple of weekend fisherman asked is there any Dolphin still out there, my reply to those kind of questions is usually the same, “yes if you look long enough”. Now the season has been fantastic but it can’t go on forever. The Dolphin this time of the year are beginning to slow down, they stop pushing to the south and hold up on floaters and other drifting debre. It does not mean you won’t find any on birds, it just means the floaters are usually going to have most of the fish on them unless somebody else has found it first. There are a lot of Artic Bonitos moving through the area now and that is usually the sign the Dolphin fishing is going to slow down a bit. It makes it tough to find the few schools of moving dolphin with birds on them because of all the bird activity involved with the Bonito. You might find 10 flocks of birds and only one may have Dolphin under them, the rest will be Bonito. A sure sign of Bonito is the speed of the schools. Bonito move rapidly to the south and the birds move just as fast to keep up. You will also see under the bird’s big busts in the water that is a sure sigh the birds are on Bonito and not Dolphin.

This week we found dolphin on all the trips we went offshore, the fish are nice size but we are not getting our limit like a week ago. The fish we found on Friday were on a big mess of rope and lobster buoys, there were lots of fish there but tough to get to bite. Saturday we stayed on the edge and had some bonito, a couple of kings and some big Barracuda. The customers were happy with all the action. Sunday we had a half day and after about all the Bonitos I felt my customers could handle we strayed offshore to find a bunch of Charter boats and a few smaller boats enjoying a dolphin derby. A large drum floating in the water was holding about 300 dolphin or more. Most of the boats got there limit, and had a great time doing it. That has been the story this week, lots of Bonito and a few kings on the edge and Dolphin offshore if you find something floating. Bait has been tough and will remain that way for a while, the water needs to begin to chill a bit before new arrivals move in. Good Luck and Tight Lines
