Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report

Rain Delay

As you all know if you live here in Miami this day is not a great day for fishing. We decided at 7am this morning to wait another day to get out. The winds and rain have put a stop on things that were starting to improve. Yesterday, Tuesday the fishing was slow on the edge and offshore in the early part of the day, but as the day progressed it got better. Miss Brit and the Cutting Edge were the only two on the water and for fishing only a half day we did not do bad. We had 12 Dolphin and mostly nice size fish. Some in the 10 to 12 pound range and a couple 8 to 10 pounders. An area of grass moved into the area and the fish were picking in the grass. Still loads of bonito;s in the area. They make it tough to locate the schools of Dolphin because if you ran to every flock of birds you would go crazy. We watch the birds and try to detect if the birds are on Dolphin or Bonito. Usually the birds stay lower to the water with Dolphin. Except, sometimes. Yesterday the bigger fish we had were mixed in with Bonitos.

The action has been 10 to 15 off and the fish are biting only live bait. Floaters are the best bet but birds are a given.

Tonight there is going to be a Question to Howard on Channel 7 which is about a complaint a customer had on a local charter boat( at this time I'm not sure which one)The complaint was in regards to the crew taking half of the catch. That is the norm just about everywhere now. Only a few boats give all the fish to the customers and those boats are not the boats that fish as hard as some of the bigger name Captains. The reason for the split is to cut expences and for insentive for the crew. It only makes since that the crew is going to work harder for the customer if the chance is there to make some extra money. For EXAMPLE:

If you owned a charter boat and you knew that all the fish were leaving in plastic bags would you go and catch 80 dolphin, so you spent 2 hours cleaning them.Would you race around giving it a 100 % spending more than the average amount of fuel you should on a trip with no way of making up the money spent. Or would you catch enough to keep the customers happy and stop. Insentive is the Key to success. In the 25 years I have been fishing I have only had a few times where the customers did not understand. They fished the next couple of time on other boats and returned with a new outlook. Half of the fish was perfect.
