Miami and Key Biscayne – offshore

Capt. Quinton Dieterle
August 19, 2001
Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report

The Edge

The Edge and the Cutting Edge were hot on Sunday, due to the lack of Dolphin offshore we decided to stay on the edge, a good idea. The day started off right, we found a nice school of cigar minnows cruising hawks channel on the way out and tossed the net with nice results. Next we moved out to the monument can, and lucky for us a nice school of big sardines had moved in. After catching three dozen sardines we moved south along the edge until I found a nice blue water edge moving in. The edge came in at the light and the water was picture perfect. A strong north current and I knew I would not be long. First bait out looked nervous but nothing ever happened, just as we finished getting the set out there he was. Chasing the sardine into the grass we had no choice but to toss a flat line to the fish and abort the attempt of catching the sailfish on the kite. The decision worked and Dave Reinbold had his first Sailfish, a big fish on 20-pound spin tackle. Stacey Brogan was happy for her friend Dave but inside I could tell she was ready for one herself. Well, it was not long before her and Dave were hooked up again. A nice double and about 20 bonito finished out the morning half-day trip. For other fishing boats today luck was hard to find. The only boat that found any Dolphin was the L & H who had a full day to hunt. He said the fish he found were in grass patches in 900 ft. of water. The Dolphin fishing had been good up to Friday, Wednesday and Thursday we had our limit. There have been large patches of grass offshore and the fish have been swimming around them. Other than the action Sunday on the edge, fishing has been gradually slowing down. I expect the fishing to be so, so for the next month. Guessing is the only for sure way of saying what will be biting each day. So to be sure you don’t miss anything you are going to have to be out. Good Luck, and Tight Lines
