Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report

RARE CATCH
Saturday started off just like any other Saturday, chasing schools of Dolphin through the grass patches and catching a couple here and there. But for Capt. Neil Orange Jr. filling in for me so I could watch my kid’s football game there was going to be a different twist to the summer time blues. As the Cutting Edge started heading in toward the edge to try there luck on sailfish and bonito and possibly a nice king or mutton, Neil spotted a strange swirl in the water ahead of the Cutting Edge. At first he thought it was a Sailfish, this is the time of year you see lots of sailfish offshore in the 1000-ft range cruising north on their annual northerly migration. But as he began to focus on the fish he saw that it was thinner and to shifty to be a sail, changing direction several times before he could get a bait out. Finally he was able to get a live Speedo in front of the mysterous fish. The fish exploded on the bait and the fight was on. He said as soon as the fish took his first run he knew it had to be a blue, never guessing it could be anything else. The fish took a hundred yards in seconds before jumping several times then sounding. After twenty minutes the fish came along side the boat and was lifted over the side for a picture, while Neil and Dave the mate for the day still had not positively identified the species. Once in the Cutting Edge it was quickly identified as a large spearfish. Spearfish are the rarest of the Billfish, and I have never caught one myself. It was a great finish to an already great day.
Report: The Dolphin fishing keeps on going, despite hot and calm seas. Large patches have been drifting though the keys and Florida straits and bringing with them at times nice schools of fish. The fish have been smaller in the last few days with the average size in the 2 to 4 pound range. They have been biting chunks and small live blue runners. On the edge there have been some Bonito and Sailfish to keep you busy. On the bottom there have been some reports of Mutton and Grouper action off the keys. That action has been best at night.
