Miami and Key Biscayne – offshore

Capt. Quinton Dieterle
October 13, 2001
Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report

NICE SURPRISE

Friday we finally got back out on a trip that we felt had some promise. Days of wind, rain and a strong North wind had finally ended. We left for a PM Half and got plenty of bait at the markers on the way out. Cigar Minnows and Threadfins are beginning to show up in good numbers. Our plans were to take a run to the south in search of floaters and birds and if we came up empty to fish the wrecks and perhaps Kite fish. As we crossed the edge I spoke with Zigger Cris and he said the edge looked good, north current and blue water, but he had not had a bite. We decided at that point to continue our plan of attack even though the urge to Kite fish I have to admit was there. After a short time I found a small piece of wood which I thought was going to be to small to hold any bait or Dolphin but decided to take a look anyways. As I approached I saw a nice Dolphin cruising around the wood. We quickly hooked that fish and up came 7 more, we caught all of them and procided to the south. At that point I knew anything we found would most likely hold fish. After about 30 minute we decided to move in closer, around 400 ft.. Quickly I spotted a Hawk on the water and took of full speed to see what was going on. It was what we were looking for, a Big Palet loaded with nice fish. We caught our limit of 50 fish even though we had to wrestle the fish away from a 33 ft intrepid that saw us stopped and ran for a mile to take our bounty. All in all the fish were nice size and hungry. If your going this weekend the best bet is to either fish the edge to the north or look around offshore for floaters. Bait is good and the seas are calming down.

Tight Lines

Capt. Q

TO THE 33 INTREPID, TIMES ARE TOUGH RIGHT NOW, ON ANOTHER DAY WE WOULD HAVE SHARED THE FISH BUT BILLS ARE COMING DUE IN TWO WEEKS AND THIS IS THE ONLY INCOME I AND THE CREW HAVE. SORRY
