Miami and Key Biscayne – offshore

Capt. Quinton Dieterle
October 15, 2001
Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sailfish Season Closing In

With the Dolphin season going and going it just seemed like the Sailfish season would never start. Well it has to sooner or later and I think it is beginning now. There is no official time to start, it just usually happens. When the first front pushes through and the weather and water-cools down is when I stop and say “ITS SAILFISH SEASON”. Of course you need some other things to happen too. You need bait in the area, north current is an important factor and blue water is another important ingredient. Kingfish are a clue the Sailfish are coming; it always seems that just after the small king’s move on the reef and on the shallow wrecks sailfish are not far behind. Dolphin are also a good indicator of when sailfish are on the move, I know when I start seeing schools of Dolphin on the edge it is Sailfish time. Why, I guess the bait offshore has disappeared and most of the fish that are scattered around offshore move to the edge for food.

So here we are in the middle of October, are any of these things happening? Well, there is lots of bait, the kings are just starting to move on the reef and wrecks, the current has this week started to move to the north on a consistent basis. The one factor I have not seen yet is Dolphin on the edge. But, last week we did see and catch some in 400 ft., they are most likely moving closer to the edge. Now, the boats fishing the edge or close to it on Friday and Saturday caught or saw a few sailfish, this could be just the beginning. They were catching most of the fish out a deep, 300 to 400 ft., and that is where I was catching the Dolphin last week. It seems the action is moving in and with it will be the Excitement that comes with fishing on the EDGE.

Report: Friday we caught our limit of Dolphin on the CUTTING EDGE off a palet in 400 ft. of water, the fish were nice size and were eager to bite. Some sailfish scattered around from 300 to 400 ft.. Kings are starting to bite on the edge in the mornings and late in the day. Small live bait is the best bait, but jigs and dead sardines works good to. Bait fishing has been steady around the bay and hawk channel markers.
