Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fishing Continues to Stay Good!!!
Well the first half of May has proven to have great conditions, and great fishing. We have fished almost everyday this month and have had some great trips. I will start with a great group of people who came to Miami for a wedding. Mark and his friends have been on many charters and are excellent anglers. We met at the dock at 7am and were off to bug light to catch bait for the day. After about an hour we caught plenty of pilchards, herring, and even a gogg somehow found its way into the well.
We ran out too 300ft of water too see if we could pick up a few dolphin. The current was taking us straight north at 5kts. After about 20 minutes i pulled up the sea anchor and the lines and we went into 180ft. As soon as i threw out the back flatline, it got picked up by a sail and Mark was quick on the rod to catch his first sailfish. After about 20 minutes we landed a nice sail. We quickly set up and caught another sail on the kite. We did another 4 drifts and caught 2 out of 3 more sails. We set up what i thought was going to be our last drift and got a really nice bite on the bow flatline. 25 minutes later Ashley lands her first fish a fat blackfin tuna. We decided to do another drift and Mark landed another sail. We finished this day at 1 blackfin 35+ and 5/7 on sails. Not bad for a 3/4 day trip!
My next trip found me in Bimini for the May mutton spawn. We left friday morning, his bug for a few hours loaded up on bait and made the trek accross. About 35 miles out we spot a frigate diving and dolphin all over. We put out a few lures and immediatly we were hooked up with schoolies. We released over 30 fish, some of which the guys caught on fly. After playing around with the dolphin we continued the trek accross. We arrive clear customs and start fishing the late afternoon bite. We immediatly hookup up with some fish. The sharks were bad but we did manage to land a few fish. We fish until about midnight, not catching anything we decided to catch some shuteye. As soon as the sun was up the bite was on again from about 7am-3pm we caught plenty of muttons, a kingfish and a 35lb black grouper. We decided to head home at about 3:30 and ran into some more dolphin. We caught a few keepers, and broke off a nice bull in the mid 20lb range. All in all it was a great trip we caught dolphin, grouper, snapper, kingfish and had a great time.
My next trip found me on the sword grounds with 2 great guys down here on a fishing vacation. We caught some livies and we were off. We were set up just before dark. The drift was blowing us out hard. At 9:30 the tip rod gets hit and David is on his first sword! She quickly comes to the boat, but as soon as she sees me reach over to bill her she makes a run for the bottom. After 15 minutes David has his first sword a nice 57" in the boat. We run back south and set up again. About 2 hours later David sees the bow tip get tapped he cranks but nothing. Thats all the action we had. David was extremely happy with his first fish, especially since we herd nothing on the radio all night.
My next trip found me on the sword with a local guy from ft Lauderdale. We tried a to catch some livies but we just couldnt get them to bite. We ran offshore and set up just befor dark. Nothing was going on so i decided to mess with the tip rod. As I was reeling it in after a long drop it got whacked and brian was on his first fish. 15 minutes later brian has a nice swordie up and she had a follower. This fish was atleast 150 lbs and was all lit up. We threw a squid out there but were unable to get her to eat. We boated brians fish and opted to keep it for table fare. She measured 54" and gave us all some nice steaks. We decided to call it an early night and were back to the dock by 11:30pm.
All in all May has treated us very well and hopefully it will continue to do so. I do have some openings still left in May, and a few in june. Swordfishing should be picking up in the next 2 weeks so lets get out there and tango with a few. Dolphin fishing is still very good and the blackfins should be around for a little while longer.
Tightlines,
Capt Joe
