Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report
End of May and beginning of June Reports
Fishing is still going strong into June. Dolphin are very abundant right now, and there are still some big fish around. There have been 2 fish over 70lbs in the past few weeks caught that i know of, and many in the 45-65lb range. We have take a few dolphin trips and have had success on all of them. We have been catching mostly schoolies, but there have been some bigger fish mixed in. We seem to be catching our biggest fish, on the troll moving from rip to rip. Yesterday I had a guy from northern Florida looking to get in on this awesome dolphin action. We caught plenty of live bait, then off we went. About 16 miles out we find a few frigates diving and lots of bait, so I decided to throw out some lures and the chase was on. As soon as we get under the birds, the left short gets nailed by a nice gaffer. As rick is working that fish in, the right long gets nailed and there is a nice bull jumping about 50yrds behind the boat. 20 minutes later we land a beautiful 39lb bull. We continue the birds and catch some more schoolies and decide to head back into the reef. We finish out the day catching a few kings and a nice mutton snapper going like 15lbs or so.
We have also done a few sword trips. The bite has been slow but we have caught fish on almost all of our recent trips. We did 5 trips, and caught 4 swords, and never got a bite on our last trip. The fish have all been legal fish, but nothing big. With the full moon just around the corner the bite should pick up. The Darkside of the Moon Swordfish Tourney is just 2 weeks around the corner.
The afternoon tuna bite is still happening. We made 2 recent tuna trips and have had luck on both trips. On the first trip we caught 2 blackfins going 15lbs and one about 8lbs. On the other trip we only caught 1 blackfin, but it was fiesty 32lber. We have also been catch some schoolie dolphin and kings on these trips.
I still have some dates open in June and quite a few open in July. The July moon is one of my favorite moons to fish for swordfish. Last yr we caught 6 swords over 200lbs on this moon phase. So give me a call and lets get out there and catch some fish!
Tightlines,
Capt Joe McGivern
