Miami & Key Biscayne

Capt. Joe McGivern

Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report

Swordfish Report for early June.

Had 3 Swordfish trips in the last 4 nights. We caught fish on 3 of the 4 trips. On the first night we caught 2 fish in the 80-100lb range. We released both fish to fight another day. The second trip we couldn't buy bite out there. We fished deep shallow and really shallow, just couldn't find the fish.

On the 3rd trip as i was letting down the first bait of the night, a pup swam up and i pitched a small runner at him, and released John's fisrt fish. We ended the night catching 4 fish, all pups under 47". On our last trip it started out really slow. At about 10:30 we got our first hit on the tip rod. after 30 minutes we have the fish up on the surface and on way to the gaff, when she decided to jump and spit the hook! That was heart breaking.

We quickly re-grouped and re-set for another drift. We ended that drift with out a hit. We ran in a bit shallower and as we were pulling them in we get a bite on the 100ft rod. The fish is coming straight to the boat so we figured her to be a pup. When we finally got color we realzed that in fact it was a pup and it was wrapped way up the line, in the 80lb main line. As i go to grab her bill she starts to go nuts and breaks through the 80lb line like butter. Their bills are that sharp which is why we use 200lb leader on these fish.

All in all it has been a good last few trips out on the swordie grounds. The Darkside of the moon swordfish tourney is just 2 weeks away. Hopefully the bite picks up some and some bigger fish move in. I still have some dates left in July so give us a shout and we will get out there and soak some baits!

Tightlines,

Capt Joe M
