Key Largo - Saltwater Fishing Report
Backcountry-12/04/08 thru 12/14/08
Fishing the backwaters off Key Largo today was very good despite the stiff winds out of the north east. Ducking in to one of the many mangrove creeks to find calm water provided good action and a mixed bag of backwater species. A strong cold front had passed threw yesterday and will send fish from the shallows into the deeper waters of the creeks. Fishing with shrimp on jigs turned up sea trout up to 20"and plenty of mangrove snapper, sheepshead, and jack crevell.Casting Berkley Gulp lures we found a good concentration of smaller snook with fish between 20 and 24 inches and a few black drum up to 8 lbs. Finding fish stacked up in the creeks is typical of the backcountry this time of year as cold fronts pass threw the Keys.
Backcountry-12/14/08
Still a lot of smaller snook holding in and near creeks in the backwaters off Key Largo.Fishing Shore line spots this past week we found Redfish and big crevell jacks up to 7 lbs. and some decent Mangrove snapper.Fishing way up in the back bays and lakes out of Flamingo there are still a lot of smaller Tarpon around. These fish seem to be there most all year but the cold fronts can affect the bite. Also lots of Snook have moved in to the back bays. Finding the salinity color change (were fresh meets salt water) was key to hitting fish.Finding Trout over the grass beds in open water was a good bet for fast action with lady fish and jacks mixed in as well. Sea Trout at this time is catch and release and will open Jan. 1
