Key Largo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Key Largo Fishing Report 1/28/13 Inshore Reef/Backcountry Fishing/ Everglades Interior lakes
This past week Key largo reef fishing was on track. Lots of good sized yellowtails and snapper on the rocks in 25 feet of water.

Grouper as well but they remain closed till may 1.Good sized jack crevell stormed by and hit all baits in the water.

With crevells up to 5 or 6 pounds they are a hand full on light spin. Spanish and cero macks busting threw the ballyhoo (mostly ceros) and blacktip sharks live baits did not last long. Good food fish, steady action and close to home the inshore reef provides and endless count of species
Fishing the interior lakes out of Flamingo in my small Jon boat the bite was also fast despite the cold front that past the day we fished. Lots of good sized trout,

reds,snook

and small tarpon

all on lures (jigs with gulps and swimmers this trip) and super shallow water. This is truly an awesome place, the water is brackish and we can get fresh water fish

next to salt water fish. Many times the fly rod works here but spin was the way to go this time. The real beauty is the solitude, its the Everglades at its best!
In the eastern section of Florida Bay Fishing out of key largo in my Hewes we found lots of fish in the creek mouths.Snook, jacks, sheepshead and snapper in the creeks and trout, jacks and ladyfish over the grass beds in 2 to 4 feet of water.

Redfish still on the shorelines and flats but the water was getting skinny with the north wind. Back to an east wind this week and we are already back in the 80s.This has been one of the warmest winters I can remember in my 25 years fishing Key Largo as a guide.
