Key Largo Fishing Update 5/22/11

Key Largo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Key Largo Fishing Update 5/22/11

With light winds and calm seas the offshore fishing has been the way to go this week. Lots of Dolphin from the reef line on out. Most all fish we ran into have been good size with a few slammers as well ( around 30 lbs).

Fish that we found have been one or two at a time hitting the troll. Both lures and rigged ballyhoo have been working. At this time the gulf stream is out about 15 miles off Key Largo but all the fish we ran in to have been inside of that. Birds have been leading the way to most of the action. Also a few black fin tuna and even got a small Wahoo on some floating debris out there last week. A few reports of blue marlin free jumping but nothing landed

Reef fishing inside has picked up this weekend with hogfish,

snapper and a few grouper among other species after a slow bite mid week due to lack of wind and current. Late afternoon fishing on the outside reef line and into the night has been the best bet for the bigger yellowtails, mangrove and muttons. As the weather gets warmer this is a good time to fish, beat the heat and limit out on nice snapper.

Most of my trips have been for dolphin but I did get in the backcountry last week. Action was very good with a nice variety of species. Saw a group of birds working the top and got into a school of bluefish on top. Under the blues we pulled out some very nice sea trout, red and black drum, Spanish mackrel, jacks and ladyfish. Every cast action with light tackle and lures this was a fun trip. Some small to mid size Tarpon have made a good showing on this last full moon, these fish are close to home, the best bite has been later in the day and after dark. Big jacks and a few snook have been in with the tarpon.

Tight Lines Capt. Bob
