Oceanside Key Largo, getting good!

Capt. Joe Costadura
May 20, 2008
Key Largo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing last week on the oceanside of Key Largo was quite productive! Although the Tarpon bite was a little off, we did see them in good numbers. Most of the fish we saw seemed to be down a little deeper in the water column and I believe these widy conditions we've been having lately have been a factor in that unlike those flat calm days when the fish are near the surface gulping for air! So if your throwing the fly rod I definetly would have a rod rigged with an intermediate or even a full sink in some cases! The Permit bite seemed to be on point and we saw good numbers of them on the leeward side cruising near the mangroves.

Mike Alfano of Ft. Lauderdale and friend Amy took two in the 10 to 12lb range on live crabs!

For fly anglers I definetly saw some good opprtunities since most of the fish seemed to be in a eating type of mood, tan crab patterns with lead eyes to get them down in the water column are the ticket!Bonefish are also out there tailng up on the flats oceanside as well as Largo Sound and I think its just going to get even better! Well with June almost upon us I hope it's brining lots of calm mornings with with lots of silver with it.

Take care for now and keep those loops tight,

Capt. Joe
