Big Bonefish on the Flats

Capt. Dexter Simmons
October 19, 2008
Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

The Fishing Report. Oct. 19, 2008

Big Bonefish have been showing on the Gulf side flats in recent weeks.

They are a bit tougher to catch than the average 5 pounder, but when you are able to hook up with a "double-digit" (10-16 pound) Bonefish on fly you are in very special company.

The trick to catching these fish is to be a bit more patient with teasing the fish to eat the fly. The best way to fish for them is when they are tailing on the grass flats, because they are less cautious and more intent on eating. If the Big Bones
are on the sand flats, they are usually more unsettled and wary of anything out of the ordinary. The hot action for these larger Bonefish should continue through November. There are also Permit and baby Tarpon available to complete that Grand Slam.

Our Father (Mother) - Son (Daughter) Key West Flats Fishing Trips are now scheduled for throughout the summer, fall, winter, and spring.
