Frequent Cold Fronts

Capt. Eric Evans
March 4, 2022
Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

January and February 2022. The Florida Keys saw many cold fronts which seemed to come every 2-3 days. The wind was howling some fronts reaching 40 knots. As one can imagine that took a big toll on our offshore fishing game. The few times we ventured past the reef was hit and miss for the tuna bite. It seemed the afternoon sunset bite produced the best when it was happening. Some clients found Mahi, sails, and wahoo while trolling the deep blue however it has been a slow start for what is typically a great offshore fishing season. Looking forward to better offshore conditions and more migrating schools coming through in March and April.

When there is a trip booked, we make it a point to contact the clients the day before and give them a weather and fish report. We keep it very honest and give the opportunity to cancel with no charge due to high winds and not being able to safety get out and show them a good time. As we did get cancellations many people opted to stay in close and just get out on the water where we could be sheltered but be limited on what we could target. Those days ended up being quite good and productive. We had a lot of shark fishing for bulls and lemons. After catching the bigger game fish we moved onto trying to secure lunch or dinner. Finding plenty of snappers including lanes, greys, muttons, and yellowtails.

All in all people left happy and enjoyed being on the water even with limited range due to weather.

We would also like to introduce our new to us 22 pathfinder. It will serve as a great addition to the family! Back country fishing, sharks, and tarpon will be the main target for this vessel. If you have a smaller group and want to get after those silver kings April-August. This will be the boat for you.
