Key West and Lower Keys

Capt. Dexter Simmons

Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

Bonefish Tails Dot the Horizon!

It always amazes me to know that the absolute best Bonefishing in the Keys happens when the least number of anglers are around to appreciate it. Indeed, many anglers are hyped up about Tarpon and flock to the Keys in the spring for the annual migration of the Silver Kings. This is understandable. Tarpon are exciting, powerful, and have tremendous fighting ability. Bonefish on the other hand are the sly grey ghost of the flats. They too are powerful on a light rod, but the real allure of Bonefishing is the stalking of these trout-like bullets as they cruise shallow shoals, tails exposed to the angler's eye. We have had some wonderful tides lately for Bonefishing, and the fish have been very hungry feeders. We've found them slurping and gurgling in packs of 6 to 12 (and sometimes 20 to 30). They have been charging our fly presentations with vigor, and the hook-ups have been characterized by powerful bursts and long runs. The only thing missing are the anglers from the north. "Oh well," my buddy Greg says, "we get some great fishing in!" Without any hurricanes around to scare off tourism, fall Bonefishing is becoming more and more popular here in the Keys.

Before you travel to the Keys for some great fall Bonefish and Permit action, call Capt. Dexter Simmons for a live report 305-745-3304. Tight Lines and Screaming Reels!
