Key West and Lower Keys

Capt. Dexter Simmons
January 8, 2001
Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

Toothy Critters Rule Until The Temps Warm Up!

The Keys have been pretty cold as of late, and the fishing has pretty much been limited to Barracuda, Jacks, Sharks and an occasional shot at Bonefish and Permit. When we get that January thaw and the water temps warm up to the mid 70's on the flats, then we will see some hot action! Until then, be satisfied with the toothy critters! Now is the time to plan your Spring Fishing Trip to the Keys. Beware that most of the "Top Guides" are probably already booked for May and June, with some dates possibly available in late June. So, if you have waited til now to plan that Tarpon Fishing Trip, then you will have to settle for March or April. Never fear! March and April can be excellent for Tarpon, Bonefish and Permit! So contact your favorite guide and set up your dates before the March and April dates disappear too!I have just launched a new web page that is linked to this one entitled "Women Fly Fishing in Key West Paradise". For those interested in checking out some great catches by lady fly fishers, jump to http://www.keywestflyfishing.com The fishing should continue to be great for the time being. Here is an image of a fly fisher that is on the new "Women Fly Fishing in Key West" page.Dawna landed this Tarpon in February, 1997! Before you travel to the Keys, call Capt. Dexter Simmons for a live report 305-745-3304. Tight Lines and Screaming Reels!
