Key West and Lower Keys

Capt. Dexter Simmons
March 22, 2001
Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

March's Lion Still Roars with Cool NW Winds

Four days ago (Sunday, March 18, 2001) Greg Persbacker cast a "Black Death" fly to a string of Tarpon on the Gulf side flats of the Lower Keys in about 6 feet of water on a sandy bottom. The lead fish ignored the fly, but Greg re-cast the fly to fish back in the string and the fly landed close to the nose of the fish, causing the fish to look up and grab the fly on impulse. Greg promptly set the hook and 90 minutes later landed a Tarpon in the 85 pound class. Since that fine day of Tarpon and Permit fishing, the Keys have been slammed by a cold front that has reduced the water temps by 10 degrees on the flats. The Tarpon and Permit have left the building and we are back to Barracudas and Sharks again!

Grand Slam fishing will return when the water warms up to the mid to high 70's again. Hopefully that will be this coming weekend. Permit, Bonefish and Tarpon action will was very good last week and we expect these species to return soon. Before you travel to the Keys for some great Tarpon, Bonefish and Permit action, call Capt. Dexter Simmons for a live report 305-745-3304. Tight Lines and Screaming Reels!
