Key West and Lower Keys

Capt. Dexter Simmons
May 1, 2001
Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

Weather Delays Tarpon Season

Another cold front swept through the Keys this week, further delaying the early Tarpon season. It got really windy and rainy on Sunday and Monday and the water temp dipped to a low of 71 degrees fahrenheit! This pushed the Tarpon into deeper water. The Permit and Bonefish are also missing in action for the most part. The only good news is that we may be ready to experience a warming trend during the next three or four days. This afternoon the water temp reached over 80 degrees in some areas, as the wind subsided and the sun warmed up the water. If this continues, the fish should be back in the next day or so. When the flats warm up again, then we will be back into Tarpon season full swing! Before the cold snap, angler Martin Ward demonstrated the "down and dirty" on this 90-100 pound silver king! Before you travel to the Keys for some great Tarpon, Bonefish and Permit action, call Capt. Dexter Simmons for a live report 305-745-3304. Tight Lines and Screaming Reels!
