Key West and Lower Keys

Capt. Dexter Simmons
February 18, 2005
Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

Permit Patrol

FEBRUARY 18, 2005Permit are beginning to Patrol the waters of the Lower Keys in packs. They have been a bit spooky and moving fast, so hook-ups have been few and far betweenIn the meantime, we are hooking up with Bonefish on warm afternoons.Marine Capt. Ernie Ferraresso and his dad Bob spent a couple of cold weather days on FlatsMaster during Super Bowl weekend. Ernie caught this Bone (pictured above) in 68 degree water. Dr. James Rockefeller also spent a day with Capt. Dexter around the beginning of February and caught this afternoon Bone (pictured below) in 70 degree water. We are also catching Cero Mackerel, Bluefish, Pompano, Ladyfish, and Jack Crevalle in the cooler waters. Soon, very soon now we should be boating Tarpon as the waters warm in the late winter and early spring.Casting from the foredeck of "FlatsMaster" in THE CAGE gives anglers additional height and stability so they may easily spot fish in the clear, shallow waters of the Keys. December, January and February are generally great months to catch Permit, Barracuda, Shark, Jack Crevalle, Pompano, Sea Trout, Ladyfish, and Lane Snapper. Bonefish and Tarpon are also available with mild weather. So plan your trip now. Permit will be Marching all winter and spring here in the Keys. There is a Permit Tournament (Del Brown Invitational) out of Key West on March 9-10-11. So call me if you would like to participate in this fly only event. Call Capt. Dexter at 305-745-3304. Bonefish will be schooling all over flats as the water temps rise to the mid to high 70's. Our Father (Mother) - Son (Daughter) Key West Flats Fishing Trips are now scheduled for throughout the summer, fall, winter, and spring. For more information about the Father and Son Flats Fishing Trips go to http://www.keywestflyfishing.com You may contact Capt. Dexter Simmons for a future fishing charter by telephone at 305-745-3304 or by email at [email protected]
