Key West and Lower Keys

Capt. Dexter Simmons

Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

Late January Cold Fronts usher in Grand Slam fishing during February and March!

Jan. 29, 2007. As January nears its end, the weather patterns here in the Keys are finally becoming seasonal. Cold fronts are sweeping through weekly. That means that we get some pretty strong winds out of the North, followed by a shift to the East in between fronts. The best flats fishing is usually during the shift to the East-Southeast. Some weeks you might get 2-3 days of moderate East-Southeasterly winds, and the fishing will really turn on as the water warms and clears. Other weeks, the winds are fresh and clock around to the Southwest too quickly, keeping the water churned up and murky, making the fishing difficult at best. In early and mid January, we had unseasonably high temperatures and some days of moderate winds producing some great Permit fishing. Here is a nice fish taken in the Marquesas. As we approach February, the Permit fishing will continue to heat up. February and March are considered to be the very best months for Permit fishing in the Keys. Tarpon will also migrate into the channels and basins during February and March. Here is a February Tarpon.Bonefish are also available during February and March. There are grand slams taken during these months, especially on those East-Souteasterly 10-15 knot wind days. Here is a February Bonefish. When you are ready to book a charter or just talk fishing, contact Capt.
