Key West and Lower Keys

Capt. Dexter Simmons
August 3, 2000
Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

Wily Bonefish a Summer-Fall Specialty

Today we ventured onto the Gulf Flats at daybreak in search of those wily Bonefish. We found them everywhere! Bones of all sizes from 5 to 15 pounds pushing water, tailing and following southern sting rays around in foot deep water. For two solid hours it was "Bonefish left, Bonefish right, Bonefish ahead, Bonefish behind... wait til he gets close enough, now cast!" Stalking Bonefish successfully on the grass flats takes patience and exceptional casting accuracy. It is imperative that you sight the fish (seeing them is half the battle), that you wait for them to swim into your comfortable casting range (for most people this is 30-40 feet or less), and that you present the fly in front of them (a foot or two) so that when you begin to strip the fly they will see it easily, chase, eat...you strip to set...then they are off to the races!!! Before you travel to the Keys, call Capt. Dexter Simmons for a live report 305-745-3304. Tight Lines and Screaming Reels!
