Summer Fun on the Flats around Key West

Capt. Lenny Leonard
August 15, 2018
Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

What a summer it has been for fishing - lots of beautiful days being spent on the flats around Key West.

Tarpon? Most days if we look we can still find a few swimming around on the Oceanside. They're not always easy to feed. But then again, are the tarpon ever easy to feed on the flats?

Bonefish? These guys are at the top of the list for a good summer species to target on the flats. I've been finding quite a few of these fishing swimming on the Gulf side flats and the Atlantic side flats.

Permit? These guys are always tough. Not always tough to find but certainly tough to feed. Lots of patience required. If you're looking for easy, this is not your fish. A great many hours spent trying to get a shot, in hopes that he chooses to eat the fly.
