Mahi Mahi, Sailfish and more biting in Marathon, FL Keys!

Capt. Bob Brown
November 24, 2011
Marathon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The middle Keys has enjoyed an extended period of excellent Dolphin (Mahi-Mahi) fishing the past few months, and the past week has been exceptional with some nice fish in the 20+lb category hitting the docks in Marathon. Along with the plentiful Mahi action, good numbers of Sailfish have been invading the reef edge all along the middle keys but especially west of Sombrero light off of Marathon and the 7 mile bridge. Sails and Mahi are being caught in as shallow as 20ft of water as they move in on the reef edge feeding on schools of Ballyhoo that have been covering the patch reef areas. Plenty of good Snapper, Grouper and Mackerel fishing has been happening on the shallow reef as well and the large Yellowtail have been chomping on the deeper reef edge along with some nice Mutton Snapper. King Mackerel are starting to show up and some large Amberjack and Almaco Jacks have been inhabiting the deep wrecks. Wahoo have been around also especially in the 200-300ft range and some Blackfin Tuna have been popping in unannounced as well. The fishing should continue to be excellent in the coming weeks and months as more and more Sailfish and Kingfish migrate into the waters as it cools this time of year.
