Marathon, Florida Keys

Marathon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Cool Fronts Heating Up Sails!

Recent Cool fronts that have moved over Florida and the Keys have helped the winter time migration of Sailfish through the middle Keys area. Sailfish "hookups" have become more common on charter boats in the Marathon and Islamorada areas lately. Sails have been hanging just off the edge of the reef in 80-200ft of water and have been caught on a variety of live baits, dead bait, and artificials. If you happen to be trolling a spread of dead

baits and targeting Sails, try one of those rubber "Bully Hoo's in your spread. I was very skeptical that a rubber Ballyhoo would work as well as fresh dead Ballyhoo for Sails but I recently tried some with good results. The very first day that I trolled a rubber "Bully Hoo" in my spread, we caught a nice 60lb. Sail on the fake bait. The fish passed up two other "real" dead Ballyhoo to get to the rubber bait on the flat line. The fake Bally's seem to have a good swimming action and soft to the bite and keeps the fish coming back after the first strike. The main drawback of the rubber baits are the durability as they seem to break apart after catching a fish or two.

Mostly, I like to fish live bait for Sailfish. My favorite baits are live Pilchards, Blue Runners, & Ballyhoo. Other good live baits for Sails are Cigar Minnows, Small Speedos, and Goggle Eyes. Most of the time if you’ve got the bait, you’ve got the “bite”. More on

what’s happening with the Sailfish bite in my next report! Meanwhile, good luck in all of your fishing adventures!
